American Coot
Original image This was my first year of finding the American Coot, an incidental discovery while canoeing on Lake Simcoe. The male Coot was making loud 'cluck cluck' noises we readily saw were to distract us from the female scooting away with her young.
I was utterly amazed to see a young chick so colourflul and easy to spot, very unusual I think in the waterfowl world as
these chicks then would be so easy to spot by predators. This was a showy little chick, a black ball of down with a fiery
head. The almost bald crown has only a few thin hairs. An absolutely unexpected ball of bright orange bobbing under the water at times trying to hide under a lily pad so as not to be discovered. What a treat to see!
